Gigliola is an Italian swimmer on a trip to Spain. After a competition, she manages to save a young Spanish girl named Angela from certain drowning due to a sudden illness. The two develop a deep friendship. Afterwards, Gigliola returns to Spain.
Between Luis, Angela's fiancé, and Gigliola, an undeclared love affair develops. At the end of the trip to Spain, the Italian swimmer returns home, tormented by doubts and lies.
The problems stem from Luis's undeclared feelings and the noble lineage falsely declared to Angela. In reality, Gigliola Di Francesco is the daughter of servants, unlike Luis and Angela.
One day, Gigliola receives an unexpected telegram from Spain: Angela announces her arrival in Naples. As the prince is absent, Gigliola's parents and brother pretend to be the noble owners of a sumptuous villa.
The comedy of misunderstandings continues until the unexpected return of the prince. In the end, everything works out for the best with a series of marriages: Gigliola marries Luis, Angela marries Gigliola's brother and the prince marries a noblewoman.
